Hi there,
There was so much going on in Congress this past week that you'd be forgiven for missing some of the bigger stories.
After the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, Democrats in the House moved to pass federal bills to protect our civil liberties that are now on shaky legal ground -- namely gay marriage and access to contraception. It was an important action to take, and it was stunning to see just how many House Republicans voted both of these bills down.
Think about this for a second, folks. Congress put up a bill protecting the right for Americans to obtain and use birth control pills, condoms, IUDs and other contraceptives. Only 9 Republicans supported it.
As President Biden said earlier this year,
"This is no longer your father's Republican Party." It's the most extreme voices who are now front and center running the show, and make no mistake, my Republican opponent Esther King would be voting lockstep with these extremists if given the chance.
Esther King staunchly opposes allowing Illinois women to make their own reproductive decisions. She also praised the Supreme Court’s decision overruling Roe v. Wade.
This past week, we also got word our race was added to the House Democrats "Red to Blue" program.
This puts Illinois' 17th District right in the center of our effort to keep the House blue. As I see it, our campaign is so much bigger than just flipping a House seat. It's about standing up to extremism and putting Congress back to work for our Northwest Illinois community.
That's why I'm running, and it's why I need your support:
Please chip in $5 to help us defeat Ester King and keep IL-17 blue. Every donation sends an important message that we are ready to defeat the far right.
Thanks for listening in. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.
