Our worst fears are coming true. Today, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to a Kentucky law requiring doctors to describe ultrasound images and play fetal heartbeat audio to women seeking abortions.

This medically-unnecessary law has no basis in medicine or science . The only thing it does is shame people for seeking abortion services.

This is another striking blow for abortion rights. We have Senator Susan Collins to thank for this.

Rather than listen to her constituents who begged her to reject Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a deeply anti-abortion judge, she towed the party line.

Since Kavanaugh’s confirmation, there has been a concerted effort to pass restrictive abortion laws with the hopes that the Supreme Court will reconsider Roe v. Wade. With surgical precision, these laws chip away at abortion rights and bodily autonomy. Thanks to Susan Collins, American women face a vital loss of their freedom to choose.

Throughout my 37-year career, I have worked on every pro-choice piece of legislation considered in the Maine legislature , and fought against any efforts to restrict the right to choose. I am ready to continue that fight in the U.S. Senate.
