Taking on the World's Leading Cause of Death
<[link removed]>
Heart disease causes more than six million premature deaths each year — making
it the leading cause of death around the globe. In 2017, Bloomberg
Philanthropies provided $100 million to help launch the Cardiovascular Health
programs at Resolve to Save Lives, which works globally to reduce heart attacks
and strokes and has saved almost four million lives to date. We recently
announced an additional $115 million to support the organization's goal of
saving 100 million lives from cardiovascular disease by 2047.

Mayors Challenge Winning Solution Adopted in Seven Cities Around the World
<[link removed]>
Never let a good idea go to waste — especially when it turns waste into
something useful. In 2014, Stockholm, Sweden was a winner of the European
Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge with aBiochar Project
<[link removed]>
that turns plant waste — grass clippings, tree limbs, and other materials —
into an environmentally friendly fertilizer. In addition to promoting plant
growth, the biochar helps lock carbon into the soil and reduces stormwater
runoff. Now, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, new biochar projects
are being implemented in seven cities in Europe and the US: Cincinnati, Ohio;
Lincoln, Nebraska; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Darmstadt, Germany; Helsingborg,
Sweden; Sandnes, Norway; and Helsinki, Finland.

Fast Company recently showcased a project supported by Bloomberg Associates to
help Milan, Italy undertake "a large-scale reinvention of its public space."
Janette Sadik-Khan, who leads Bloomberg Associates' Transportation practice,
put in place a plan to reclaim and convert 250,000 square feet of road space
into public plazas. Today, more than half of the city's residents live within
walking distance of a public space, and the project serves as an example for
cities around the world seeking to create more walkable neighborhoods.

<[link removed]>
<[link removed]>
Kate Levin, who leads our Arts program at Bloomberg Philanthropies, joined a
panel at the Aspen Ideas Festival to discuss the impact of NFTs — non-fungible
tokens — on art. The advent of NFTs and the decentralization of buying and
selling has disrupted traditional aspects of the art world. Kate and the panel
members examine the changes from the perspectives of artists, sellers,
collectors, and curators.
