The January 6th Committee held another hearing this week, and so far, we’ve heard mounting and carefully laid out evidence showing Donald Trump incited the January 6th attack and did nothing to stop the violence.
Trump’s advisors told him there was no evidence of voter fraud, and people around Trump -- including Vice President Pence -- told him what he was doing was illegal .
Trump ignored them. He met with conspiracists and extremists who encouraged plans to overturn the election and got Republican Members of Congress involved in his efforts to object the results.
We learned how Trump came to post a tweet claiming election fraud and encouraging supporters to go to D.C. on January 6th for a “big protest.” Witnesses who were at the riot said they were inspired to go because of Trump’s tweet.
We saw video of the tours taking place on January 5th that Republicans have long denied.
The hearings are painting a very clear picture: Trump had a direct hand in the attack at the Capitol. As my colleagues and I stood on the House floor attempting to fulfill our constitutional duty to certify the election, Trump watched with complete disregard for our democracy.
January 6th was a dark day for our country, but I refuse to let it define us. I took an oath to protect and defend our Constitution. That’s why I’ve been demanding accountability since that day to make sure it never happens again.
Trump and the GOP want us to forget and move on. We can’t .
We need to keep speaking out about what happened on January 6th. Our democracy depends on it. [[link removed]]
