Dear Friend,
Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision in the West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) case that dangerously narrows the EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants — a decision that was years in the making.
According to the New York Times, the case is “the product of a coordinated, multiyear strategy by Republican attorneys general, conservative legal activists and their funders, several with ties to the oil and coal industries, to use the judicial system to rewrite environmental law, weakening the executive branch’s ability to tackle global warming.”
Now, as we grapple with the Supreme Court’s decision and its impact on environmental regulations — and the Senate unlikely to pass transformative climate legislation, despite massive popularity with the public — LCV is steeling ourselves for the long fight ahead.
It took years of planning and slow execution to chip away — bit by bit — at our nation’s environmental protections and democratic norms. And it will take years of counter measures to reverse this damaging trajectory and create a more sustainable and just future.
Fortunately, LCV’s three-pronged strategy to build power for people and the planet — robust on-the-ground organizing, expert lobbying, and best-in-class electoral operations — makes us one of the most well-respected and effective environmental organizations in the country.
That’s why Legacy Supporters like you are so important. Legacy Gifts to LCV through your estate plans ensure that we have the long-term ability to fight for future generations and their right to a sustainable world — one with a stable climate, good-paying jobs rooted in a clean energy economy, and a healthy environment in which everyone can live free of toxic pollution regardless of their race, income, or zip code.
Right now, it’s critical that we know if you’ve already made a Legacy Gift to LCV through your estate plans so we can accurately assess our resources for the long fight ahead. Can you let us know if you’ve made LCV a designated beneficiary or added us to your will or trust?
Friend, it took polluters and their allies decades to get our nation into this situation, and it’s going to take decades to get ourselves out of it. But we can’t give up — our children and grandchildren are counting on us. You can help us win the long-term fight ahead by supporting the future work LCV does to ensure a healthy, safe, and just environment for all. Click here today to let us know if you’re in for the long haul with us.
LCV is in this fight for the long haul. We hope you'll keep fighting alongside us.
Onward,
Gene Karpinski
