1.??IRS Commissioner to deliver keynote address during week two of the 2022 IRS Nationwide Tax Forum Join the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum for week two of the program, as IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig delivers his keynote address on July 27 at 2 p.m. EDT. For the full webinar schedule, descriptions of the webinar topics and to register, visit the tax forum website. 2.??IRS Acceptance Agent application moratorium Beginning Aug. 15, the IRS will impose a moratorium on the Acceptance Agent program. The moratorium will last until summer 2023 and, when lifted, a notification of rescission will be issued. The moratorium will allow for significant modernization efforts resulting in a more efficient application process. The overall timeframe to process properly submitted applications will change from months to weeks. While in place, Form 13551, Application to Participate in the IRS Acceptance Agent Program, will not be accepted. To prepare for the moratorium, new and existing CAAs and AAs should take the following actions, if needed:
3.??2021 tax extension filers don?t need to wait until Oct. 17 The IRS reminds the estimated 19 million taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax returns that they don't have to wait until mid-October to file. If your client has all the necessary information to file an accurate return, they can file electronically at any time before the October deadline and avoid a last-minute rush to file. Visit IRS.gov for filing options, answers to frequently asked questions and other resources. This news release is also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese. 4.??Identity Protection PINs provide an important defense against tax-related identity theft Tax pros: The Security Summit partners encourage you to increase your efforts to inform your clients about the IRS Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program to help protect people against tax-related identity theft. The IP PIN serves as a critical defense against identity thieves. The IRS, state tax agencies and the nation's tax industry ? working together as the Security Summit ? need your help to let taxpayers know that IP PINs are now available to anyone who can verify their identity. The IRS also provides information about how the IRS contacts taxpayers and avoiding scams. 5.??IRS issues new five-year plan with goal to help taxpayers The IRS recently released a new five-year Strategic Plan that outlines its goals to improve taxpayer service and tax administration. The IRS Strategic Plan FY2022-2026 will serve as a roadmap to help guide the agency's programs and operations. The plan will also help meet the changing needs of taxpayers and members of the tax community. 6.??A Closer Look at the Whistleblower Office In the latest executive column, ?A Closer Look,? John Hinman, Director, IRS Whistleblower Office, discusses how his team, working closely with other areas in the IRS, enhances tax enforcement through the valuable contributions of whistleblowers. ?Whistleblower information that the IRS can act on is an important component of effective tax administration and contributes to identifying noncompliance and reducing the tax gap,? Hinman said. This feature is also available in Spanish. 7.??Video: 5 Things to Know with the ETAAC chair In a recent Tax Talk Today interview, Courtney Kay-Decker, Chair, Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC), talks about the recently released ETAAC Public Report, how the committee has evolved over the years and how viewers can get involved with ETAAC. 8.??News from the Justice Department?s Tax Division Yomarie Febres, of Covington, Ga., was sentenced to 51 months in prison for conspiring to defraud the United States by promoting a nationwide tax fraud scheme involving more than 200 participants in at least 19 states. In addition to the term of imprisonment, the district judge also ordered Febres to serve two years of supervised release and pay $11,140,842.65 in restitution to the IRS.
