Dear neighbor,
As your Member of Congress, I’m pleased to update you on the work I’m doing in Washington.
This week, the House Judiciary Committee passed a bill to reinstate the assault weapons ban, the first step in bringing the measure to a vote by the full House. Every Democrat on the committee voted for the bill, and every Republican voted against it. In my remarks, I emphasized that AR-15s are weapons of war. They have no place on our streets, in our schools, or anywhere in our communities. Americans deserve to have the freedom to go to schools, parades, grocery stores, concerts, places of worship, movie theaters, and everywhere else without fear of being the victim of a mass shooting. Watch my full remarks here.
While we work to protect our communities against gun violence, we also are fighting to defend individuals’ constitutional rights from a radical Supreme Court majority. This week, House Democrats took action by passing the Right to Contraception Act, which would guarantee the right to obtain and use birth control, and the Respect for Marriage Act to protect the right to marry for same sex and interracial couples.
Last night, the January 6th Committee held an important hearing examining Donald Trump’s actions on the afternoon of January 6th. The evidence they presented was disturbing, and further showed that the former President assembled the mob, incited the mob, and leveraged the mob to stop the certification of the electoral college results. Every American should watch this hearing.
In addition, Congress is preparing to pass the CHIPS for America Act, which invests in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips in America. This bipartisan package will lower costs for families here at home while reigniting American competitiveness abroad. It would also create nearly 100,000 new American jobs and protect our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign manufacturers. The House hopes to take up this bill next week.
Here are some other items I’ve been working on:
- Voted in favor of House Democrats’ funding bill that fights climate change, bolsters mental health services, supports our veterans, and lowers the cost of living for working families.
- Spoke on the House floor in support of Rep. John Larson’s bill to protect and strengthen social security.
- Applauded House passage of my provision to halt imports of elephant and lion hunting trophies, which was included in a FY23 appropriations package.
