Transhumanism can mean uploading one’s mind into cyberspace. But some transhumanists hope to slowly morph into “immortal cyborgs” with endlessly replaceable parts. Proponents of this idea think that humans will eventually be replaced by these cyborgs.

In 2015, Boeing introduced robots to fasten the forward and aft fuselage sections on the 777. Boeing thought robots would reduce the cost and need for employees. However, this was quickly found to not be the case. In November, Boeing finally announced that they would return to human labor for attaching those fuselage parts.

Princeton neuroscientist Michael Graziano thinks that consciousness is both randomly evolved and purely physical. He also thinks that humans can develop machinery to model it. We could thus postpone death indefinitely and perhaps achieve immortality. That point of view—transhumanism—is big in Silicon Valley.
