Notes from Mike's Desk for July 18 – 22, 2022
Hello, friends. Welcome back to my newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. Thank you for subscribing and please consider recommending this resource to a friend.
IN THE HOUSE
Ever since the Dobbs decision, pro-life pregnancy care centers—which care for pregnant women, infants, and families—have been subjected to a nationwide spate of violence and vandalism. In fact, in just the last 11 weeks there have been 50 such attacks on these centers.
This political violence has been met with silence from President Biden and Congressional Democrats, and on Tuesday, I introduced a simple resolution condemning these despicable actions. To no surprise, Democrats voted down my resolution. At least we know where they stand.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
Because we live in dangerous times, I stressed during this week’s House Armed Services Committee hearing that the Department of Defense needs to be ready to expand the defense industrial base as the need arises.
This week during a House Judiciary Committee markup, I offered an amendment to protect our military service members from the Democrats’ latest gun grab. As a slap in the face, the Democrats refused to allow an exception even for the most well-trained citizens who have sacrificed to protect our freedom. It’s outrageous.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
On Wednesday afternoon, I led a group of my colleagues on the House floor to address President Biden’s ongoing economic and energy crises which are now taking a back seat to the House Democrats’ misguided agenda.
I used some of my time to call out Democrats who are now “sounding the alarm over inflation.” They should’ve sounded the alarm before they voted for $5.4 trillion in new spending, and we will make sure the American people don’t forget who got us into this mess.
In case you missed last week’s edition of the Liberty Letter, I introduced a bill – the Unborn Child Support Act – aimed at providing child support payments to pregnant mothers while their children are still in the womb.
We acknowledge the indisputable fact that life begins at conception, and our laws should reflect that. I was proud to introduce this bicameral bill alongside Sen. Kevin Cramer, and it’s our hope that this bill will garner bipartisan support. Read more about the bill below:
LAGNIAPPE
My office is excited to take part in this year’s Congressional App Challenge, a public effort to encourage students to learn how to code. Check out the flyer below for more information on how middle school and high school students can participate.
Thank you again for subscribing and reading. We’ll have more next week!
