ACLU Supporter –

When we say that the ACLU was made for this urgent moment in reproductive freedom, it's not an empty promise.

While we are doing all we can to defend and proactively expand abortion access wherever possible right now – we also know too well that the fall of Roe implicates not just people's abortion care, but so many other fundamental rights.

This issue is about women's rights, transgender rights, racial justice, immigrants' rights, the rights of people with disabilities, the rights of people currently incarcerated, and far more.

Truly, it's about all of us. And that's where the ACLU knows how to succeed – we have the expertise and infrastructure that was built to protect not one civil liberty, but all of them.

Here are just three of the cross-issue arenas we're fighting back on in our work for reproductive freedom:

On Privacy Rights:

* How it's connected: Law enforcement already has a long history of abusing the abundance of digital data we produce each day and now people who seek abortion care – especially in places where abortion is banned or highly restricted – will have to contend with a massive digital surveillance system that could be used against them. That could be anything from warrants for your search history, your cell phone's location data, or even your financial records.

* How we're fighting back: The ACLU is working across the nation to push states to take real action to protect our digital privacy, like introducing state legislation preventing law enforcement from making overly broad requests to try to identify everyone who visited a particular location (such as an abortion clinic) or searched online for particular keywords (such as abortion care). We also continue to fight at a federal level for The Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act, which would require the government to secure a court order before buying our personal information from data brokers.

On LGBTQ Equality:

* How it's connected: The overturning of Roe hurts all people who can get pregnant – which very much includes many LGBTQ people. But even beyond this more direct and harmful impact, the Supreme Court ruling also implicated many other rights that LGBTQ people have fought so hard for – from the right to marry who you love to the right to gender-affirming healthcare. This moment represents a new and profoundly disturbing front in the current attack on LGBTQ people in America – but we at the ACLU know that it is just one aspect of a crisis that is already well underway.

* How we're fighting back: Before SCOTUS' decision, we were in the midst of an aggressive assault on LGBTQ people – especially trans youth. Over 300 anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills were proposed in state legislatures in 2022 alone. We've been challenging these bills relentlessly in the courts and statehouses this year, including against anti-trans bills in Texas, Arkansas, and beyond. And we will continue to move this fight forward – while we also push to defend and expand abortion access for anyone who needs the essential healthcare.

On Voting:

* How it's connected: While we know and understand that voting alone is not always enough, it still absolutely remains one of the greatest mechanisms of change in our democracy. And given that abortion access is literally on the ballot this year – and that an overwhelming majority of Americans support abortion – it's critical that we do all we can to both secure everyone's right to vote for the issues they believe in and mobilize for reproductive freedom in key elections ahead.

* How we're fighting back: The ACLU is addressing this urgent work on both fronts: To expand and protect abortion rights, we're supporting key ballot measures to amend state constitutions to protect reproductive freedom in Michigan and Vermont – and actively opposing efforts at the ballot to limit the promise of state constitutional protections in Kentucky and Kansas. And this is all in addition to our continued fight in the courts to protect people's safe and equal voting power from voter suppression tactics and racially-motivated gerrymandering.

These are only three of the many intersecting issues that the ACLU is dedicating our full fighting power toward as we push urgently to defend abortion access.

And we cannot do any of this work alone. We're in this fight alongside our nationwide network of affiliates, our coalition partners, health care providers and practical support organizations, our fellow civil rights advocates in the movement – and our amazing community of ACLU activists like you, ACLU Supporter.

That is the power of the people and that is where we can win in the weeks and months ahead.

Together,

The ACLU Team
