John,

A disturbing report from the California-based non-profit DigDeep estimates at least two million people don’t have running water or a toilet at home.

The result is a crisis costing the U.S. economy $8.58 billion annually. Water access issues disproportionately impact people of color, immigrants, low-income families, Indigenous tribes, and rural communities. These communities are frequently overlooked when investments in water infrastructure are debated.

The DigDeep study findings are a wake-up call for all of us that want to ensure inequities in underserved communities are eliminated.

According to the report, households without water and sanitation access spend an average of $15,800 yearly more than other families in health care costs, lost work and school productivity, and other issues. It costs the average family $1,350 annually to purchase enough bottled drinking water to live on. That results in an estimated $291 million for all households across the country that lack water access.

It’s not just the money, either. Some families have to devote hours of their lives each week to haul water from streams, wells, and grocery stores. This comes with a higher risk of waterborne disease, diabetes, physical and mental health issues. The report calculates the resulting increased health care costs the U.S. $762 million annually.

John, it is shocking to discover millions of Americans are still without access to clean water and sanitation in 2022. It will only get worse with climate change. Fortunately, SEEC members are on the case. SEEC members were crucial in securing $55 billion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for clean drinking water infrastructure, which is now being spent in disadvantaged communities across the country.

SEEC members of Congress are committed to funding new spending to create long-term, sustainable water and sanitation access for all Americans. Will you show your support for their commitment? [[link removed]]
