The Classic – “I was able to pay for my college with a summer job! Why can’t you?!”
Here’s what we say to that: Sure, paying for college was much easier decades ago when the average cost of public four-year college was $730 a year, but now a public university education can cost closer to $9,000 and private universities can cost near $32,000 a year. Times are different and without legislation to ensure affordable public education, we cannot expect young people today to pay for college with a part-time job. “Why isn’t $10K enough?”
There are currently more than 44 million student loan borrowers holding $1.7 trillion in student debt. While canceling $10K is a HUGE step in the right direction, it would still leave a majority of borrowers without any kind of relief. This is a massive problem that requires a solution of the same scale. |
