President Biden has yet to make an announcement on student debt and the Gen-Z and Millennial voters who delivered his victory in 2020 expect bold action on debt cancellation ahead of the midterm elections this fall. With the student loan payment pause ending next month, we need you to join us in calling on Biden to dream bigger than canceling $10,000 per borrower as he promised on the 2020 campaign trail and cancel ALL student loan debt.

We know the issue of canceling student debt raises a lot of questions, so let’s tackle some common misconceptions. 

The Classic – “I was able to pay for my college with a summer job! Why can’t you?!”

Here’s what we say to that: Sure, paying for college was much easier decades ago when the average cost of public four-year college was $730 a year, but now a public university education can cost closer to $9,000 and private universities can cost near $32,000 a year. Times are different and without legislation to ensure affordable public education, we cannot expect young people today to pay for college with a part-time job. 

“Why isn’t $10K enough?”

There are currently more than 44 million student loan borrowers holding $1.7 trillion in student debt. While canceling $10K is a HUGE step in the right direction, it would still leave a majority of borrowers without any kind of relief. This is a massive problem that requires a solution of the same scale.

“What about an income cap? Or means-testing?”

Providing relief only to those who meet a certain criteria would create many administrative problems which could prevent the most vulnerable borrowers from receiving any relief at all. This is why we’re pushing Biden to make the simplest choice: cancel it all. 

Canceling student loan debt is not something we can accomplish alone. We need all hands on deck to continue urging the Biden Administration to cancel ALL student loan debt. Get involved with our Dreams Not Debt campaign to continue raising your voice around the issue.
