Friend,
We have just 11 days until government funding runs out, and if the President doesn't make a deal soon, we could face another government shutdown disaster. Already this President has begun hinting that he may try to use a shutdown to get more funding for his wall or to stop the House's impeachment proceedings. For the sake of our country and our federal workers and contractors, in particular, I hope that's not true.
But I have to tell you, I think it's just plain stupid that politicians can shut down the government in the first place. That's why I introduced legislation called the "Stop Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage in the Coming Years Act" or Stop STUPIDITY Act. This legislation, whose name my staff clearly worked really hard on, is simple:
If the White House and Congress can't reach a deal to fund the government, then Congress and the White House shut down until they figure it out. The rest of our government stays open. Federal workers and contractors will no longer be treated as bargaining chips. They'll continue to work hard and earn their paychecks, while the politicians and their staff go without pay until they do their jobs and fund the government.
Frankly, I think this legislation is long overdue. And as we inch dangerously closer to another shutdown, I think the time to pass it is now. If you agree that we need to keep our government open and stop the STUPIDITY of these pointless shutdowns, will you sign my petition and demand Congress pass the Stop STUPIDITY Act today?

You have my word that I'm going to do everything in my power to avoid another shutdown at the end of this month. And while I'm at it, I'm going to be pushing my colleagues to end these pointless and harmful shutdowns once and for all.
