In the midst of droughts, intensifying wildfires, extreme heat and catastrophic weather events, a majority of the U.S. Senate has chosen to side with the oil and gas industry, with politicians raking in campaign dollars from polluters while people suffer. There is a vacuum of leadership at a time when every day, every month, and every year matters. President Biden needs to step up to the plate and swing for the fences. Declaring a climate emergency would allow President Biden to begin taking bold actions necessary to mitigate some of the most catastrophic consequences of the climate crisis. Also, to be blunt, we need to see President Biden prioritize this issue. He needs to show a real sense of urgency toward the climate crisis to the climate majority that elected him and everyone across the country and around the world. Because it’s not going away. A record-breaking heat wave is currently engulfing Europe. And yet both Europe and the United States — two of the world's largest contributors to global warming — are prolonging the reliance on fossil fuels. California’s representatives in Congress fought valiantly for climate provisions to be included in the final reconciliation bill package. They pushed for investments in clean energy, clean water, wildfire prevention, and more. And Congress still has until September 30 to pass the bill. President Biden must be the bold, unifying leader he strives to be and use his influence and bully pulpit to get a bill with these key climate provisions passed. Send the President a message: Tell him to use his power to lead on climate >> We cannot afford to wait. |
