Dear Friend,

This week, I voted to protect same-sex and interracial marriage and every New Mexican’s right to access contraception.

It’s hard to believe that in the year 2022, anyone would vote against these basic human rights, but that’s exactly what members of House GOP did—with 157 voting against the Respect for Marriage Act and 195 voting against the Right to Contraception Act. And we are still waiting for the Senate to take up the Women’s Health Protection Act and other critical legislation, which we passed in the House last week.

With so much at stake, I took to the House Floor to explain why we’re fighting to protect these rights—watch here.

Why are such basic rights under threat? In the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurring opinion where he plainly stated that this extreme conservative Court would be coming after contraception and the marriage rights of LGBTQ+ individuals next.

To counter these steps backward for equality, the Respect for Marriage Act repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and prohibits any state attempts to deny same-sex or interracial marriages. The Right to Contraception Act affirms the right to contraception and protects health care providers who provide this essential health care. This bill also protects against state laws that attempt to restrict access to contraceptives and reinforces the Attorney General’s authority to bring civil action against states that may do so.

Now that this important legislation has passed the House of Representatives, we need 60 members of the Senate to step up. They must vote to protect the fundamental human right of every American to marry the person they love, access the care the need, and determine their own future.

We have a lot of work to do—but I want you all to know that I am here in the fight to defend the rights of every New Mexican and every person across the United States.

Are you concerned that the Supreme Court may overturn rights to equal marriage and contraception?
