House Passes Bill to Codify Same-Sex Marriage 

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas included in the Dobbs ruling last month that "The Supreme Court must revisit and overrule past landmarks decisions that legalized the right to obtain contraception, the right to same-sex intimacy and the right to same-sex marriage." So Congress is taking things into their own hands to try to protect same-sex marriage. Obergefell v. Hodges, a landmark decision that made same-sex marriage legal in the US, has been under threat since the SCOTUS' decision in 2015. 

The House passed the Respect for Marriage Act on Tuesday with 267 votes- 47 of those were Republicans. NC Senator Thom Tillis has said he "probably will" vote for it.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls! See the final municipalities and counties that have elections below:

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Franklin County, Jackson County District 2

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold): Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

Durham Tech Food Pantry Donation Drive

Please join us and our friends at Carolina Jews for Justice on Sunday, July 24 to benefit Durham Tech Community College's Campus Harvest Food Pantry. They are looking for diapers of any size, menstrual products and "grab and go" nonperishable breakfast items to stock in their food pantry!

We'll be at the Durham Co-Op at 1111 W. Chapel Hill St in Durham from 11am-12:30pm. Please drop off and donate any items you can!

HB 158

Over the last week the internet has found out about HB 158 that was introduced in the NC state house in February of 2021. The bill is the most extreme out of all the anti-abortion bills introduced, passed and/or signed into law in the US so far. While this bill is dead because the legislature is out of session for the remainder of the year, except for the days that they will return once a month for the remainder of the year, it should still be alarming that this bill was introduced in the first place. The bill states:

"A distinct and separate human life begins at the moment of fertilization. As such, that new human life is recognized by the State as an individual person, entitled to the protection of the laws of this State from the moment of fertilization until the moment of natural death. Any person who willfully seeks to destroy the life of another person, by any means, at any stage of life, or succeeds in doing so, shall be held accountable for attempted murder or for first degree murder, respectively. Any person has the right to defend his or her own life or the life of another person, even by the use of deadly force if necessary, from willful destruction by another person."

In essence, if this bill were passed by a supermajority, no abortions would be allowed in the state of NC and anyone who attempts or successfully has an abortion will receive the death penalty. It does not seem to have any exceptions for incest or rape. And Roy Cooper's veto would have no power as a supermajority could override his veto.
