This week, InSight Crime investigates how El Salvador’s government has been implicated in aiding the escape of a top MS13 gang leader into Guatemala, mere months before the beginning of an intense crackdown on gangs that has so far led to the arrest of close to 50,000 alleged gang members.

We also look at the assassination of the son of former Honduras President Porfirio Lobo Sosa by a professional outfit, which authorities quickly, and without any hard evidence, blamed on the MS13. Meanwhile, in Mexico, we review what impact the capture of Rafael Caro Quintero -- co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, and the man known as the “narco of narcos” -- will have on the country’s criminal dynamics (spoiler alert: not much).

The release and subsequent escape of a top MS13 leader from a maximum-security prison in El Salvador underscores the gang’s unique ability to leverage its political connections and transnational networks to safeguard its most important members.

An online paper trail left by the partner of Elmer Canales Rivera, alias "Crook," a long-standing member of the MS13's top ranks, known as the Ranfla, revealed that he stayed in a luxury apartment in El Salvador before escaping to Guatemala with the government’s help, eventually reaching Mexico, according to a recent report from El Faro.

Last week, InSight Crime published a long-form report on the origins and evolution of “tusi,” a synthetic drug with a trademark pink color, which spread across Latin America and changed beyond recognition. It quickly became one of the most-read articles we have published this year and saw coverage in the UK ([link removed]) and Mexico ([link removed]) .

Rafael Caro Quintero’s capture also prompted Mexican newspaper El Financiero ([link removed]) to cite our interview with Tenoch Huerta, the actor who played the drug lord in the series Narcos, while our article on the case of Brazil’s Pablo Escobar, Sergio Roberto de Carvalho, was cited as far afield as Hungary ([link removed]) and Germany ([link removed]) .

In addition, we’re delighted to announce that Mexican news outlet, La Lista, which is allied with The Guardian, will soon be republishing InSight Crime content every Saturday.

** Coming Soon: The Destruction of Latin America’s Fisheries
------------------------------------------------------------

Next week, InSight Crime will begin the publication of a major investigative series covering the looting of oceans across nine Latin American nations.

Ahead of the report, we look back at the struggle for survival of Mexico’s vaquita marina porpoise ([link removed]) , intense poaching of Brazil’s freshwater giant, the Arapaima ([link removed]) , and illegal mass fishing ([link removed]) by Chinese trawlers in Ecuador, Chile, and Peru.

In September, we’ll be holding an event in Washington D.C. to discuss the findings from our year-long investigation. Stay tuned for more details.
