While the impeachment proceedings are an absolutely vital part of the fight against President Trump’s corruption, long before Ukraine was part of the conversation, we were sounding the alarm on Trump’s unconstitutional use of his office for his own personal gain. Here at CREW, we challenged Trump on his conflicts of interest and unconstitutional acceptance of emoluments from the very start of his presidency. We’re involved in two groundbreaking emoluments lawsuits against the President, and both of them have recent updates:
In CREW v. Trump, the historic lawsuit we filed on President Trump’s first day in the Oval Office, we won our appeal in federal appeals court in mid-September. This was a huge victory for our fight to hold the president accountable for his egregious constitutional violations. We are pushing for the case to return as quickly as possible to the district court to move forward on fact-finding and a ruling on the merits—which we strongly believe are in our favor.
In the other lawsuit, brought by the Attorneys General of Maryland and Washington, D.C. with CREW proudly serving as co-counsel, we won at the District Court level last year, with the judge making a series of historic rulings providing that the case could proceed. President Trump appealed the decision to the appeals court, and a 3-judge panel dismissed the case in July. However, we petitioned the full court to reconsider, and it agreed to do so, tossing out the panel decision. The full 4th Circuit Appeals Court will be hearing the case this Thursday, December 12. We’re looking forward to being in the courtroom, as DC and Maryland make the case that this lawsuit can go forward to ensure that President Trump’s corruption and blatant violations of the Constitution cannot be allowed to continue.
Both of these cases are far from over, and the pursuit of justice in both cases has taken time. Over the last three years, President Trump has engaged in rampant and unprecedented corruption, continuously violating the Constitution and opening himself up to endless conflicts of interest. Here at CREW, we’ll continue the fight to hold President Trump accountable for as long as it takes. The strength of our democracy depends on it.
Thank you for standing with us,
