House Passes Right to Contraception Bill; Now Heads to Senate

Wall Street Journal: The House on Thursday passed a bill that would protect access to contraception on a federal level, as Democratic lawmakers say they fear the recent Supreme Court ruling ending the constitutional right to an abortion could endanger other protections. The bill passed 228-195, with two voting present, largely along party lines. It follows another piece of legislation that passed this week to protect same-sex and interracial marriage, in which about four dozen Republicans joined Democrats in support. Democrats are seen as the underdogs in November’s midterm elections in the House, and they have been rolling out a series of votes related to privacy rights that they say could be in jeopardy. In Thursday’s vote, eight Republicans sided with all Democrats (Wall Street Journal). CBS: The bill, called the Right to Contraption Act, now goes to Senate, where it is unlikely to attract the support of 10 Republicans needed to pass it. The measure would create a statutory right for people to access birth control and protect a range of contraceptive methods, as well as ensure health care providers have a right to provide contraception services to patients (CBS).

Russia’s Nord Stream Pipeline Begins Flowing Energy Into Europe

Wall Street Journal: Russian natural gas began flowing again at a reduced volume through a critical pipeline into Europe on Thursday, buying time for governments to decouple from the Kremlin’s exports amid what they expect will be an increasingly unreliable supply of energy from Moscow heading into the winter. The Nord Stream pipeline connecting Russia with Germany under the Baltic Sea resumed operation after its annual maintenance, ending 10 days of tense speculation about whether President Vladimir Putin’s regime would cut off the gas flow to Europe in retaliation for Western sanctions after his invasion of Ukraine (Wall Street Journal). CNBC: Flows are running at reduced volumes, however, and have been since Russia’s onslaught in Ukraine with Moscow squeezing supplies to the European region. But it’s still likely to be a welcome relief to European officials who have been scrambling to find alternative suppliers to Russian gas (CNBC).

House Democrats Halt GOP’s Bill Blocking Sale of Oil From Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China

Spencer Brown: In a vote on Wednesday afternoon, House Democrats shot down a GOP-led amendment that would ban the Biden administration and U.S. Department of Energy from selling oil kept in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to one of our nation’s biggest foes, China. 219 House Democrats voted to block the bill from going forward as gas prices remain more than $2 more expensive per gallon than when President Biden took office, signaling again that Democrats are all-in on their radical “transition” aimed at ending fossil fuels no matter the cost to Americans (Townhall). Rep. David Valadao: I just requested a vote on legislation that would stop the Biden administration from sending our Strategic Petroleum Reserves to China. Every single Democrat just voted to put China’s national security over our own (Twitter).

House Democrats Bring Assault Weapon Ban to House Vote

Associated Press: House Democrats pushed ahead Wednesday with legislation that would ban certain semi-automatic weapons as they considered their most far-reaching response yet to this summer’s series of mass shootings. Democrats hope that the 100-page bill moving through the Judiciary Committee will pass the House before the August break. But that is far from assured because some moderates in the party, especially those from swing districts, are wary of a vote on broad gun controls before the November elections — especially when the bill has little chance of becoming law due to opposition in the Senate. Democrats can afford to lose only four votes if Republicans are united in opposition to the ban. Maine Rep. Jared Golden, who represents a GOP-leaning district, is one of the few Democrats who have indicated a “no” vote (Associated Press). Townhall: Jerry Nadler: “The presence of a gun in domestic violence situations increases the risk of homicide [of] women by 500%…” @RepChipRoy: “Not if the woman holds it” (Twitter)! Daily Caller: Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler admitted a Democrat-led bill intends to confiscate guns in “common use” during a Wednesday House Judiciary Committee hearing. Republican North Carolina Rep. Dan Bishop asked House Democrats if they dispute the fact that the proposed legislation H.R. 1808, titled “Assault Weapons Ban of 2021,” bans firearms in “common use” throughout the country. “Would anyone on the other side dispute that this bill would ban weapons that are in common use in the United States today?” Bishop asked. “That’s the point of the bill,” Nadler replied (Daily Caller).

LAUSD Provides Blueprint for Teaching Queer Theory Year-Round

Could be called “Pride Year.” Washington Examiner: The Los Angeles Unified School District offers schools and teachers a “Queer All School Year” calendar that provides a blueprint for promoting LGBT pride throughout the year. Documents from the Los Angeles Unified School District Human Relations, Diversity, and Equity office contain a month-by-month plan for schools to promote gay and transgender ideology to students in different ways. The documents, obtained by conservative education activist and Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Christopher Rufo, encourage school staff to “support students in starting a GSA or Rainbow Club” in August, “prep for next month’s Solidarity Week and teach LGBT- inclusive curriculum all year” in September, and “post LGBTQ-affirming signs in your office, classrooms, and around campus” in December (Washington Examiner). Christopher Rufo: I have obtained a trove of documents from the district’s Human Relations, Diversity, and Equity department, which has created an entire infrastructure to translate the basic tenets of academic Queer Theory into K-12 pedagogy (Twitter). Daily Caller: The “Standing with LGBTQ+ Students, Staff and Families,” run by school administrators taught “local social justice engagement” and gave out free “gender-affirming clothing,” the documents stated. Teachers were instructed how students can be “Muslim and Trans” and taught how to address different “religious objections” to gender theory. A trans-affirming calendar, deemed “Queer All School Year,” featured different pride events each month such as the “Standing With LGBTQ Students Conference,” according to the documents. The training program “Queering Culture & Race” promoted the abandonment of gendered expressions such as “boys and girls” (Daily Caller).

Amazon Expands Further Into Health Care With Purchase of One Medical

Associated Press: Amazon will acquire the primary care organization One Medical in a deal valued roughly at $3.9 billion, marking another expansion for the retailer into health care services. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant said in a statement Thursday it is buying One Medical for $18 per share in an all-cash transaction. Its one of Amazon’s biggest acquisitions, following its $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods in 2017 and its $8.5 billion purchase of Hollywood studio MGM, which closed earlier this year. One Medical, whose parent company is the San-Francisco based 1Life Healthcare, Inc., is a membership-based service that offers virtual care as well as in-person visits. It also works with more than 8,000 companies to provide its health benefits to employees. As of March, One Medical had about 767,000 members and 188 medical offices in 25 markets, according to its first-quarter earnings report, which also showed the company had incurred a net loss of $90.9 million after pulling in $254.1 million in revenue. The total deal value announced Thursday includes One Medical’s debt (Associated Press). NBC: Amazon’s stock gained roughly 1% in early trading Thursday. Amazon signaled a greater interest in the health care space when it purchased PillPack in 2018 for $750 million, using the acquisition to launch its own online pharmacy years later. The company has also ramped up its telehealth service, called Amazon Care, and it has sought to develop at-home medical diagnostics (NBC).

Up to 8,000 Jobs on the Line as Ford Shifts to EV Production

Yahoo: Ford is reportedly planning to cut up to 8,000 jobs over the coming weeks in an effort to fund its plans to build EVs, according to Bloomberg. The layoffs would occur at its Ford Blue unit, recently created to develop vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), and would affect other salaried positions in the company. The bulk of cuts are expected to occur in the US. In March, Ford CEO Jim Farley restructured the company, dividing it into the Ford Blue and Model E divisions, with the latter dedicated to electric cars and pickups like the Mach E and F150 Lightning. As part of that, he announced plans to cut $3 billion in costs by 2026, with the aim of transforming Ford Blue into “the profit and cash engine” for the entire company (Yahoo). Reuters: The Dearborn, Michigan-based company also said at the time that its EV business would not be profitable until the next-generation models begin production in 2025 (Reuters).

Disney Changes Name of “Fairy Godmothers in Training” to Be More Gender Inclusive

Fox News: Cinderella’s “Fairy Godmother” is apparently going woke, too. Cast members at Disney’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique now will be called “Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices” — instead of “Fairy Godmothers in Training” — according to Disney. The change is an attempt for the theme parks to be more gender-neutral, Walt Disney World (WDW) News Today shared on Tuesday (Fox News). Daily Wire: Per the park website, this makeover experience caters to young guests ages 3 – 12, helping them transform either princesses or knights. The Disney-themed blog Streaming the Magic described the name change by saying, “This way, cast members that might not identify as female can still be part of the process to dress up & style the children without having to refer to themselves as a female Disney character” (Daily Wire).

Senator Whitehouse Calls for Biden to Create Climate, Abortion Legislation by Declaring National Emergency

National Review: President Biden is once again gearing up to utter a series of words that ought to inspire Americans to search in exasperation for their pitchforks: “If Congress won’t do it, I will” (National Review). Wall Street Journal: My intention is not to describe paint drying in the Senate but to draw attention to a party that since May 2020 has gradually disconnected from normal political processes. After Mr. Manchin withdrew his support for the climate legislation, citing opposition to new taxes and inflation, former Obama White House counselor John Podesta wrote the senator had “doomed humanity.” Rhode Island’s Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to—where else?—Twitter to liberate himself from Congress: “Free at last. Let’s roll. Do it all and start it now,’’ Mr. Whitehouse tweeted. “With legislative climate options now closed, it’s now time for executive Beast Mode.’’ Under a new unchecked and unbalanced constitutional system called executive Beast Mode, Mr. Biden would declare “national emergencies” on both abortion and climate, presumably leading to an array of sweeping presidential enactments accomplished by Mr. Biden repeatedly producing his signature (Wall Street Journal). Jeff Stein: Democratic Senator Whitehouse (RI) calls for WH to deploy “executive Beast Mode” on climate through unilateral actions. Does not seem like WH will be able to point to courting Manchin as a reason to hold off. Whitehouse has specific demands here too (Twitter). Yahoo: Our constitutional order deserves the loyalty of everyone who serves under it. So, even if it is inconvenient for presidents to recognize that the exclusive grant of legislative powers to Congress is an absolutely essential part of the Founders’ design, they should be ever mindful of it. If that is too much to ask, at least Congress should be protective of its own role… Regardless, the balance between the presidency and Congress will never return to a more reasonable equilibrium until lawmakers of both parties stop cheering on acts of unilateral governance by the White House simply because they like the result (Yahoo).

YouTube to Begin Censoring Some Abortion-Related Content

Axios: YouTube will begin removing and labeling certain abortion-related content on the video-sharing platform, the company said Thursday. As states pass new laws and rhetoric continues to heat up, tech platforms are grappling with how to treat online information about abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Starting Thursday, YouTube will globally remove content that “promotes or provides instructions” for unsafe or alternative abortion methods not supported by science or approved by medical professionals. YouTube will also remove false claims about abortion such as claims that abortion commonly causes infertility or cancer (Axios). CNBC: The company said it’s also launching an “information panel” to provide “viewers with context and information from local and global health authorities.” That will show up underneath abortion-related videos and above relevant search results. YouTube gave an example of how it will be displayed, showing a definition of abortion, according to the National Library of Medicine. “An abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy,” the display said. “It uses medicine or surgery to remove the embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus. The procedure is done by a licensed healthcare professional.” The panel includes a link for people who want to “learn more” and instructions to “Consult your local medical authority for advice.” YouTube has taken a similar approach for other controversial topics such as the Covid-19 pandemic and political elections. But it’s been uncommon for the company to state that it will remove videos altogether (CNBC).
