26 & 27 October 2022
Are you feeling the heat this week?
It has become increasingly obvious that the world’s climate is changing dramatically as we experience more extreme weather, such as heavy rain and heatwaves.
Earlier this week, a national emergency was declared in the UK after a red extreme heat warning was issued for the first time, indicating a risk to life and substantial disruption to infrastructure as temperatures hit 40°C.
Firefighters across Europe in Portugal, Spain, France, Greece and Morocco are battling forest fires raging across tens of thousands of hectares. In Portugal, 238 people have died as a result of the heatwave from 7-13 July 2022, most of them elderly with underlying conditions.
Meanwhile, 4,026 fires have been recorded in California, reaching approximately 27,848 acres across the state.
The world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history and the race is on for global leaders to come together to find scalable solutions that will limit the planet’s temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees.
The Thomson Reuters Foundation raises awareness of global human rights issues such as the climate crisis via our news coverage [[link removed]], journalist training, legal research and convening initiatives. We examine the economic risks and opportunities that climate change presents, and how people – particularly the world’s most vulnerable – are adapting to economic risks driven by a heating planet. By bringing together leading experts and strengthening reporting on these issues, the Foundation aims to bring about positive change in the way economies operate, that could help build a safer, fairer, greener and more resilient world for billions of people.
Our annual human rights forum, Trust Conference, on 26 & 27 October 2022, provides a critical platform for world-leading experts, innovators and activists at the forefront of global efforts to discuss what drastic actions need to be taken to tackle climate change. Topics include the progress and setbacks in the transition to greener energy sources and the importance of responsible and sustainable business models to tackle inequalities and protect people and the planet as a whole ecosystem.
