Last year, nearly 68,000 Americans died from drug overdoses. That’s more of our fellow citizens than died during the entire Vietnam War. The good news is that while the fight is far from over, we have started to turn the corner here in Ohio.  We saw a 22% reduction in the number of overdose deaths in 2018 as compared to the year before. 

In 2016, Congress passed my Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). Last year, President Trump signed my STOP Act into law  to help crack down on illegal substances like fentanyl from being shipped to the United States from places like China through the U.S. mail system.  And Congress is providing a record amount of assistance to states and treatment providers to help combat the opioid epidemic.

In recent months, we have seen a big shift from opioids to other drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine, and the federal government needs to give states more flexibility to use that federal funding to address the changing face of addiction. That’s why I have introduced the  Combating Meth & Cocaine Act, which would do just that.
