Dear New Yorkers,

Oversight and accountability are at the heart of our work here at the Comptroller’s Office. Our office is empowered to audit City agencies and programs, to identify problems and propose solutions to improve how the City delivers services to New Yorkers.

Check out our new Audit Recommendations Tracker to track the outcomes from audits by the Comptroller’s Bureau of Audit.

It’s important to me that our audits don’t just drive a one-day headline. Our goal is to help make New York City government work better. Public engagement, follow up from our auditors, and agency action are often all needed to ensure real changes are made. Our new Audit Recommendations Tracker is intended to bring public attention and transparency to the recommendations of our audits, so that we can all ensure that follow up happens.

Watch a video to learn more about the Audit Recommendation Tracker:

Earlier this month we released a hard-hitting audit that found the NYC Ferry system cost approximately a quarter billion dollars more than previously reported by the City. And we got results! EDC accepted some of our recommendations and just a week after we announced our findings about the NYC Ferry’s undisclosed spending, sky-high subsidy rate, and unnecessary costs, the Mayor announced changes to ferry fares to make them more fair for New Yorkers.

And that is just one of the many audits we’ve released so far this year. Since the beginning of the year, my office has released 25 audits and audit letters focused on how New York City agencies can make the best use of their resources to serve New Yorkers.

For example, the office’s audits have shone a spotlight on how:

Our hardworking team of auditors are looking closely at the operations and management of city agencies, but their work to bring change is more powerful when New Yorkers themselves are involved. Your input into what programs or issues need oversight, and your advocacy to encourage agencies follow through on making change are critical to improving how NYC serves New Yorkers.

So, check out our Audit Recommendations Tracker today and suggest an audit or investigation. You can learn more about what kinds of questions make a good audit and give us your ideas here.
