Hi John — I wanted to take a few minutes to share what I’ve been working on in Congress with you. This email is a little longer than what I normally write, but if you have a few moments to spare today, I hope you’ll take the time to read it.
I ran for office to be a fearless, outspoken leader for working families in Illinois, and it’s my hope that by advocating for progressive, popular initiatives and introducing thoughtful legislation, I’ll maintain my commitment to the people.
Right now, one of my top priorities is lowering costs for working families. Inflation has hit us all hard, and I know I don’t have to tell you that — I’m sure you and your family feel it every time you head to the gas pump.
While many families are wondering how they’ll afford their next fill up, oil companies have raked in record amounts of profits at the expense of everyday Americans and our car-dependent infrastructure.
To combat their unfair pricing and provide relief for working families, I helped pass the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act in the House. This legislation would hold multi-billion dollar oil and gas companies accountable and lower the price at the pump nationwide. Now, I’m calling on my colleagues in the Senate to get this critical legislation on President Biden’s desk.
As a registered nurse, making quality health care more affordable and accessible is deeply personal to me. And I’m excited to share that my legislation, the Health Care Affordability Act, lowered annual premium costs by an average of $2,400 per family, and led to a record 14.5 million Americans enrolled in coverage for this year!
This was part of the historic American Rescue Plan which delivered more affordable, accessible, and equitable health care for millions of people nationwide. And just recently, I wrote to both Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer urging for more permanent legislation to cement low health care costs for working families.
Just like gas, the costs of health care are unavoidable, which is why I won’t stop calling out corporate exploitation and working to protect and expand affordable, accessible health care — especially as Republicans target reproductive rights.
And as anti-choice leaders continue their attack on women, I want you to know that I won’t back down.
Last week, I voted to pass two bills in the House that would restore the right to an abortion and prevent anti-choice states from prosecuting women who cross state lines to receive the health care they need. This week, I look forward to voting to pass legislation that would also protect the right to contraception, and continuing my work to address our nation’s maternal health crisis by expanding access to affordable cancer screenings, maternal care, and more.
As a member of Congress, I’ve had nine pieces of legislation signed into law — and it has all been possible because I’ve had an incredible team of supporters just like you in my corner every step of the way. With so much important work still ahead of us, I’m hoping I can continue to count on your support.
So before I go, I have to ask: Will you pitch in today to help support my reelection campaign? Every dollar goes toward making sure I can continue advocating for working families in Congress — and anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
