John – it wasn’t surprising to see this headline in The New York Times:

“Next Front Line in the Abortion Wars: State Supreme Courts”

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, state supreme courts are one of the last lines of defense against abortion bans – IF we can keep them out of GOP hands.

And right now that’s a big if. Thirty-two states will be electing judges to their highest courts this year, and Republicans have announced they’re making these races a priority.

Will you help the NDRC keep the GOP from dismantling our democracy?

Abortion isn’t all that’s at stake at the state court level. State courts have been a critical line of defense against Republican attempts to gerrymander and restrict the freedom to vote. In fact, that’s exactly why Republicans are so interested in replacing fair-minded judges with partisans who they believe will let them manipulate maps.

You don’t have to take it from me. A spokesperson for the Republican State Leadership Committee said that “If Republicans and conservatives want to control the redistricting process… [they] also need to control the supreme courts.”

But we have a plan. This election year, we’re targeting three key state supreme court races – in Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina – as part of our Democracy Targets campaign. We’re committed to protecting these courts as neutral arbiters that will defend voters against gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the curtailing of reproductive rights.

I’ll be blunt, John: We need your financial support to execute all the parts of our plan. That’s why I’m emailing you today. Will you chip in whatever you can to help the NDRC defend our rights and democracy?
