John, Earlier this week, a video came to light showing Matt Birk, the Republican-endorsed candidate for Lt. Governor of Minnesota, disparaging women and survivors of sexual assault. Speaking at an anti-abortion convention just hours after Roe v. Wade was overturned, Birk, in the clip, compares abortion to slavery, claims people who are pro-choice are just playing "the rape card," and says our culture "promotes abortion" by telling women “they should have careers.” Birk's comments are deeply disturbing, but at least a Republican finally said the quiet part out loud: Abortion bans have always first and foremost been about controlling OUR own bodies. We can’t afford to elect anti-choice leaders who think that we should discourage women from having careers and don't trust or respect survivors. A woman’s choice to have a career – much like her decision on when and whether to have a child – is none of my opponent’s business. No abortion ban will ever become law under Governor Walz’s and my watch. But if Scott Jensen and Matt Birk win in November, they would sign a Texas-style abortion ban the moment it hits their desk. The right for Minnesotans to make their own health care decisions is on the ballot this November. Governor Walz and I are fighting with everything we have to hold the line, but we can’t build the campaign we need to win without your support. That's why I'm reaching out personally. Our first budget deadline since we launched our first TV ad is tomorrow night, and we still need to raise more than $17,000 to reach it.
