John,
My name is José Garza and I’m the District Attorney for Travis County here in Texas. I’m also one of the 88 elected prosecutors who vowed not to prosecute abortions.
Enforcing abortion bans runs counter to my sworn obligation to protect the safety and well-being of their communities.
There is no question that this ruling by the Supreme Court will make our community less safe. We know that this is not going to end abortions, it will end safe abortions for too many.
It’s why, even though this ruling has put targets on all of our backs by anti-choice politicians and supporters, we are proud to be standing our ground.
Many of the elected prosecutors who took the pledge like myself live in states that are some of the strictest in the country on abortion. But as elected officials, we have a responsibility to the people to uphold our civil rights.
Together, we are about to find out just how radical the conservative movement is and how far they are willing to go — including targeting DAs like myself and other Real Justice-backed prosecutors.
Here in Texas and nationally, Republican leadership has demonstrated time and time again that they are willing to play politics with our public safety, that there is no length to which they will not go to score political points.
That is the reality of our current Republican party: They are increasingly an undemocratic party that has imposed radical views not supported by the majority of the people who live in the state or this country.
But we know that the right to an abortion — which has been identified in the United States Constitution, which has been a part of our legal system for over 50 years — enjoys widespread popular support from the people who give consent to be governed.
Pro-choice district attorneys like myself, who took the pledge stand together in our firm belief that prosecutors have a responsibility to refrain from using limited criminal legal system resources to criminalize personal medical decisions.
Conservatives know that DAs are the first line of defense to protect abortion rights and will escalate their attacks on elected prosecutors like me in the coming months to try to stop us. We need to be ready to fight back. Are you going to join us?
Thank you,
José Garza
