Our Next Strategic Plan for Oregon Coast Coho Recovery Targets the Coos Basin |
Every summer, you’ll find Wild Salmon Center and our partners getting muddy boots on ground restoring high-priority habitat in Oregon Coast coho salmon systems like the Elk and Siuslaw. Now, with the completion of our third Oregon strategic action plan, we're shovel-ready for our next watershed: the Coos Basin. The Coos is home to dynamic rivers, productive agricultural lands, and the largest estuary completely in Oregon. With our many local, state, and federal partners, we'll be rolling out restoration projects in these watersheds and beyond for years to come. Hope to see you out in the field!

How Jason Ching Reimagined Bristol Bay
Seen from the air, Alaska's Lake Iliamna takes on a light green, even turquoise tint. It looks tropical. Add a thousand fire-engine red sockeye salmon to the picture and the scene turns otherworldly. But this, and the many other images captured by Seattle-based photographer Jason Ching over the last 14 summers, are all real. What’s more, they've changed the course of history for Bristol Bay. We talked with Ching about how he's come to fill a powerful niche in the national campaign to save Bristol Bay. Check out our Q&A with Ching, and then add your voice to the call for EPA to stop Pebble Mine.

In B.C., Chum Fishery Closure Opens the Door to Reform |
On British Columbia’s Central Coast, a failing chum fishery left a wide wake of unintended impacts for vulnerable runs of steelhead, Chinook, sockeye, and more. This July—following startling new data on species declines from a team led by WSC's Dr. Will Atlas—Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans declared a years-long pause on Area 8 commercial chum fishing. First Nations and conservation groups see a silver lining in this move: an opportunity to truly reform fisheries, and rebuild the region’s wild fish runs.
