Team,
The ‘dark money’ is already flowing in for Elissa’s opponent. So what does that mean exactly? And how does it really impact campaigns? Here’s an example:
An out-of-state Super PAC called Americans for Prosperity Action has a special interest in Elissa’s opponent. Because it’s a Super PAC, it's easy to hide who's funding them -- our campaign finance system allows them to hide their donors, and how much they give. A person or corporation could spend millions of dollars, and the public may never know.
You may recognize the name Americans for Prosperity – it’s the major project funded by David and Charles Koch. They’ve been pouring money into conservative candidates and causes, such as fighting back against minimum wage increases, for over a decade.
This group has identified Elissa’s opponent as a politician to invest in. He’s on their farm team – they’ve invested early, bankrolling ads across his district as far back as 2014 when he very first ran for State House. They had his back again with ads in his run for State Senate, and now, they’re back again for his run for Congress.
When he votes the way AFP likes, he sees major spending on his behalf.
For example:
AFP came out against the deal that’s enabling GM to build a new electric vehicle battery plant in the 7th district (creating thousands of jobs in the process) on the day it was announced. Elissa’s opponent voted against the deal, and not long after, they endorsed his campaign.
And then, they started to spend money, spending $40,000 just in the past few months. That money has gone to canvassing the new district — meaning people paid to knock on doors, giving the appearance of grassroots volunteers — digital ads, and door-hangers, which we’ve already seen popping up.
But here’s the thing: this is just the start. These outside groups can spend *unlimited* amounts of money supporting whichever candidates they see fit – as long as they don’t technically coordinate with the campaign.
How do we plan to combat this kind of large-scale outside spending? The same way we always have – with the grassroots support of actual people who believe in Elissa. That’s why we’re asking that you chip in today to help us fight back against outside money and spread Elissa’s message to the new 7th district. [[link removed]] Cause that dark money is coming!
