Follow NASN on Social President's Message In July, we observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This month is designed to "bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness," according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Many factors play into the struggles minority communities face. Basic mental health care services are often inaccessible. Many minority communities have cultural stigmas around mental health care, and there is an overall lack of awareness about mental health. Check out the resources NASN provides to help school nurses address this topic within your school community, and learn more about the resources DHS has as you read through the Weekly Digest. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights NASN Releases New Type 1 Diabetes Toolkit NASN is excited to introduce the new School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Toolkit. School nurses provide leadership in the school setting to support resilience and self-management for students with T1D. NASN’s School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes provides evidence-based recommendations to assist the school nurse in their role of improving the health and safety of the school-age child with T1D. This toolkit will help school nurses implement those recommendations. This study, which looked at two different approaches to managing mild persistent asthma in children and teens, adds to evidence that symptom-based adjustment of medication works as well as provider-based adjustment for treating children and teens with mild persistent asthma. The study's findings can help caregivers work with doctors to choose the best option for managing their child's mild persistent asthma. NASN2022 Assessment and Evaluation To receive the Certificate of Completion and be awarded Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) contact hours for the sessions for both In-Person and Virtual NASN2022, complete the assessments and evaluations on the Assessment and Evaluation Platform. Choose the event and the day of the session to locate assessments and evaluations for activities on that day. There you can also find the syllabus for each event (this includes the session handouts), event discussions, and instructions to complete NCPD. The deadline to earn NCPD for both events is October 14, 2022. COVID-19 Updates New CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWR) Although COVID-19 vaccination has been recommended for children aged 5-11 years since November 2021, coverage among this age group remains low. CDC released a new MMWR on July 1, showing that ensuring broad access to COVID-19 vaccines could help increase vaccination coverage among children aged 5-11. Learn more. Poor ventilation in schools plays a significant role in infectious disease transmission, including COVID-19. Substantial federal financial resources are available to improve ventilation in schools. CDC released a new MMWR on June 10 reporting on the varied strategies impacted by school characteristics, including poverty. Learn more. Improving School Community & Student Health Innovation in School Nursing Do you have an innovative idea that's going to bring positive change to school nursing this year? MakerHealth wants to listen to your ideas and take action on them to promote the health and safety of students and families. Maybe you've spotted an opportunity to invent something to aid students in managing their chronic conditions, or maybe you want to co-create a personalized diabetes or asthma kit with a student. This program supports creative school nurses ready to lead the creation of new tools and more devices to boost students' confidence and increase health equity in their communities. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month 2022 National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July, bringing awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. The HHS Office of Minority Health offers tools and resources to address the stigma about mental health among racial and ethnic minority populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. NASN Resources: It is imperative that school systems respond to and address student behavioral health and wellness to ameliorate disparities related to the social determinants of health. One of NASN's goals is to pursue health, education, and social equity for all students through shared leadership. NASN2022 focused on Connecting Health Equity and Student Success, and the 2022 NASN President's Endowment Challenge theme is Transform Student Health Equity. LGBTQ Inclusivity in Schools: A Self-Assessment Tool Schools play a critical role in supporting the health and academic development of all youth, including the success of LGBTQ youth. The CDC has released this self-assessment tool to help school and district staff understand current policies, programs, and practices that may contribute to safe, inclusive environments where all youth can be successful. Preventing the Spread of Infectious Diseases in Schools Healthy Schools, Healthy People is a joint initiative between the American Cleaning Institute and the CDC dedicated to supporting school systems nationwide with tools to help reinforce hand hygiene and cleaning practices to prevent the spread of infectious disease and reduce related absenteeism. As a school nurse, you can make a critical difference in preventing the spread of infectious diseases in your school. Find resources here to develop an action plan, engage your students, and get the school community involved. NASN Resources: Cleaning hands regularly is a key preventive action that can be taken to avoid exposure to the COVID-19 virus. The role of the school nurse is to inform school administrators, staff, and students on the impact of and understanding the importance of implementing good hand hygiene practices in helping to ensure health and safety in the school community. UV Safety Awareness Month 2022 In July, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), raises awareness that UV is the root cause of most skin cancers and encourages the public to take precautions.
