In Buffalo, NY, RootsAction Senior Strategic Organizer India Walton is working to undo the gerrymandering of city council districts. The Council just approved gerrymandering in a secret meeting. The matter now goes to the mayor. Advocates for good government will likely be taking the question to court. India is forming, through RootsAction Education Fund, a new nonpartisan organization -- RACE (Roots Action Civic Education) Buffalo -- to support efforts like fair districts, improve civic engagement, and make Buffalo more just and equitable.
In Podgorica, Montenegro, our allies have delivered to the government our petition to protect the Sinjajevina mountains from construction of a military base.
We've organized a new coalition to Defuse Nuclear War with a new podcast. We've planned an event for Washington DC on August 5 called "77 Years Later: Eliminate Nukes, Not Life on Earth." We're promoting legislation to ban nuclear weapons and move the funding to where it's needed. We're pressuring Congress to, at long last, end U.S. participation in the war on Yemen. RootsAction has created a new conversation in U.S. media with the announcement that we will be launching a “Don’t Run Joe” campaign to oppose the renomination of Biden. Read coverage in The Hill, Politico, and the Washington Post.
RootsAction has been doing both get-out-the-vote and fundraising efforts for the best Congressional candidates, including Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Andy Levin, David Segal, and Ilhan Omar.
