It doesn’t take more than a quick Google search to see how hostile local school board meetings have become.
Parents -- usually riled up by what they see on cable news -- are having heated exchanges about mandatory masking, LGBTQ students, and the GOP’s new favorite buzzword: “critical race theory.” As a classroom teacher, I can state that CRT is not a curriculum – it is not in any textbook. It is not "taught".
Now Congressional Republicans are capitalizing on the fear and falsehood that CRT is in the classroom for political gain. I will not stand by quietly as these lies are spread and endanger my student's education and the safety of school officials, teachers, and staff as a result of the growing threats of violence at these school board meetings.
The Justice Department released a statement saying they would work to ensure the safety of school officials, teachers, and staff due to the growing threats of violence at these school board meetings.
That was all Kevin McCarthy needed to hear to turn this subject into another hot-button political issue. If given the gavel, Kevin McCarthy has vowed to use his power to launch a full-scale investigation of the Justice Department’s handling of the school board hearings.
There's nothing to investigate, it's just a ploy to rile up his base.

As a public school teacher, I’ve been to my fair share of school board hearings. I know firsthand what it’s like to interact with concerned parents and make sure their voices are heard.
Kevin McCarthy isn’t concerned with improving the lives of our students. He’s only interested in using Congressional power to push his personal agenda, and further divide our nation to score cheap political points.
