As a member of the United States military and intelligence services, I’ve been trained to use firearms. I’ve also seen up close the violence and destruction guns can cause in the deadliest hardship and combat zones.

Yet too many American communities have seen that same carnage here in the homeland.

Children are slaughtered in schools. Shoppers are attacked in grocery stores. Just this month, on the 4th of July, a horrific mass shooting took seven innocent lives at a parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

John, I was deeply disappointed when, last week, WI-03’s congressman was the sole Democratic vote against critical, commonsense legislation that would help alert communities to gun violence threats. 43 Republicans bucked their leadership to vote with the majority for this legislation that will save lives. His vote was out of step with what the majority of voters in our district and across the country are asking for right now.

During my work in combat zones and hostile environments, the idea of creating a safer world for my kids and grandkids sustained me. I think of them, and of every American, now.

If elected to Congress, I will be a strong voice in support of reasonable measures to keep our communities safe, including banning ghost guns and requiring checks for violent history. If I were serving now, I would have voted in favor of the gun violence alert legislation. As it is, I am the only candidate in my race who’s spoken up about this issue.
