Economists estimate that we’re barreling towards a recession in 2023.
Friend,
We’re in the midst of a new era of empowerment for the American worker. Union election petitions are up 57% in the last six months, with unionization efforts at Starbucks, Amazon, and Apple making headlines nationwide.
But this improvement in working conditions could soon be stalled. Thanks to inflation, economists estimate that we’re barreling towards a recession in 2023. The Federal Reserve is quick to blame rising wages, but they miss the point; economies flourish when everyday people have the income to increase their spending power and invest in their communities.
If we face a recession, there will be no doubt that working- and middle-class Americans will bear the brunt of it, including mass layoffs, job insecurity, and exploitation by employers. That’s why unions are so critical in this moment of economic uncertainty, and why we can’t allow corporations to interfere with workers’ right to organize.
Sign if you agree: We need to demand that the Senate pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to strengthen collective bargaining rights and hold corporations accountable for violating workers' rights.
Strong unions mean a strong middle class. They mean fair wages, benefits, and better working conditions for everyone. But we can’t just sit back and let union organizers do the hard work. We need to step up and stand with them.
I have worked with unions for years, helping the United Auto Workers (UAW) secure federal worker retraining grants and fighting for fair contracts and labor practices with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). While serving in the Department of Commerce, I pushed to give labor unions a stronger voice in influencing economic policy. But as we face what could be even greater resistance to unionization in the months ahead, we need Congress to take action to protect workers.
Will you help us turn up the heat on the Senate and make the PRO Act the law of the land?
In solidarity,
Ro
