John, the once thriving Chinook salmon is now in jeopardy thanks to climate change.

A recent study conducted by the University of Idaho found that breeding areas for salmon in Idaho’s rivers are rapidly disappearing as water levels decrease and the river currents have slowed down.

You see, salmon need water temperature, depth, and velocity to be *just right* in order to reproduce. But finding these perfect conditions has become a challenge as climate change alters the rivers.

And it’s only getting worse: suitable breeding habitats for the Chinook salmon may be cut in half before the year 2040.

We know how important every species within an ecosystem’s food chain is, and already we see an accelerated trend of extinction for many species due to climate change. Losing the Chinook salmon will have far-reaching consequences if we refuse to do more to defend our environment.

That’s why SEEC Member and Chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife Jared Huffman has made it his mission to promote policies that will protect wild fish as well as support sustainable fisheries. His Sustaining America’s Fisheries for the Future Act was the product of years of stakeholder engagement to make sure all voices were considered as Congress works to protect endangered fish.

What’s happening with the Chinook salmon is just one example of the many species that are at the front of climate change’s disastrous effects. That’s why the work SEEC members are doing is so critical. They’re fighting in Congress to stop climate change and protect our most critical wildlife from extinction.
