Dear Friend,
I’m excited to share some important news with you! This week, I am proud to announce that we passed a budget in the House that includes all 15 of my community project requests to invest in public safety, housing and homelessness, food security, and the economic well-being of all New Mexicans. I wanted to share the details of how this federal funding will help our communities once it passes in the Senate.
As you might recall, I announced 15 projects at the beginning of June which we were submitting for the appropriations process on behalf of our communities. I’m excited to share that these projects have cleared the first hurdle, and here’s a sneak peak of what they can do!
Projects to Address Public Safety, Behavioral Health, and Health Care Needs
- $410,721 for N.M. Forensic Laboratories to get fentanyl and other drugs off the street.
- $1.5 million for Sandia Pueblo’s EMS and Fire Station.
- $2.8 million for the N.M. Department of Public Safety’s Mobile Crisis Team.
- $6.8 million to the Albuquerque Sobering Center.
- $1 million for the First Nations Community HealthSource Behavorial Health Clinic Expansion.
- $400,000 for Two Mobile School-Based Health Centers to help APS provide health care.
Projects Tackling Veteran’s Homelessness, Housing, Hunger, and Water Security
- $300,000 for the first all-Veteran transitional housing campus in New Mexico.
- $1.5 million for the Albuquerque Homeless Youth Center.
- $1 million for Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless.
- $875,000 to expand the East Mountain Food Pantry.
- $2.5 million for wastewater treatment to the Town of Mountainair.
Projects Growing New Mexico’s Economy, Jobs, and Rural Opportunities
- $1.5 million to the Sandoval County Animal Shelter
- $1.5 million for a new UNM/Sandia Labs STEM Pipeline
- $600,000 for the Albuquerque Adult Learning Center’s adult literacy and job training programs.
- $650,000 for Families First Economic Justice Project
We also voted for key appropriations bills as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 “Minibus”—which is Capitol Hill-speak for the first half of the federal budget.
This budget has some key wins for New Mexico, including over $16 billion for climate and clean energy funding, $560 million to expand rural broadband, over $62 billion for housing vouchers and affordable housing, and over $460 million for comprehensive opioid treatment and response programs. As our state continues to battle devastating wildfires, the budget also funds wildland firefighting resources to the tune of $6.43 billion.
These are just some of the highlights. If you want to dive into what exactly is in this budget, you can visit my website here. Keep in mind that this funding is now being sent over to the Senate—and I will be working with our New Mexico Senators and the State to get this funding to our communities.
