Today, Brian Kemp’s extreme and dangerous bill — which makes abortion care
a crime after six weeks of pregnancy, before many women even know they’re
pregnant — was finalized by the courts and is now the law of the land in
Georgia.

This decision bans access to abortion care at 6 weeks and sends a clear
and terrifying message to Georgia women — the freedom to determine if,
when and how to start or grow a family is on the line — and on the ballot.

There is no other way to put it: the person who took an oath to protect us
just made it even more dangerous to be a woman in our state.

Kemp’s callous decision to put politics above women’s healthcare needs
endangers the lives of all women and their families and it will exacerbate
crises in our state.

Under Kemp, Georgia is at or near the bottom on nearly every health care
measure — from doctor and nursing shortages, to maternal and infant
deaths, to the shuttering of three hospitals during the pandemic.

This is outrageous. We deserve better and we must fight back.

As Georgia’s next governor, I will defend a woman’s right to choose,
support reproductive health care with a comprehensive plan for Georgia’s
women in the aftermath of Kemp’s disastrous bill and protect the rights of
all.

John, as a
legislator, as a woman and as a Georgian, I have spent my career fighting
for reproductive justice. I defeated a bill that would have injected
racial division into medical decisions. I challenged bills that banned
insurance coverage for abortion. I battled those who sought to limit a
woman’s right to control her body – including the six week ban that will
govern the lives of Georgians.

As governor, I will use my office to stop further attacks on women’s
rights in their tracks.

But first, we must stand together — women, advocates, reproductive justice
activists, the LGBTQ+ community, health care providers, allies and all in
our state who will not be still or silent while we are under attack. We
must continue the fight for safe access to the reproductive health care we
need and deserve.
