In summer 1882, 27-year-old Irish writer Oscar Wilde spoke in Texas as part of an American tour. He stopped in Fort Worth, Jefferson, Galveston, San Antonio, and Houston.

He continued: ?It was in San Antonio, however, that I found more to please me in the beautiful ruins of the old Spanish mission churches and convents and in the relics of Spanish manners and customs impressed upon the people and architecture of the city.?
