JOHN,

Let’s face it: these days, it’s expensive to be a Vermonter.

From the checkout counter to the pharmacy to the gas pump, working families across the state are feeling the pinch. The U.S. Consumer Price Index has risen 9.1 percent over the last twelve months. That, combined with Vermont’s housing, workforce, and child care crises, means Vermont families are struggling.

Here’s how I’ll get to work delivering relief in Congress:

Prescription Drugs: I’ll fight to allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies over prescription drug pricing. Vermonters – especially aging Vermonters – shouldn’t face financial ruin to pay for the medication they need.

Housing: Vermont needs to build more housing. Through federal investment in wastewater and sewer, we can provide the support needed to boost housing supply in our downtowns. And through The LIFT Act, we can bring homeownership within reach for first-generation homebuyers.

Fuel: I’ll support an immediate pause on the 18-cent federal gas tax, accompanied by immediate action to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. With an eye towards the winter ahead, I’ll further expand investment in LIHEAP to ensure that low-income Vermonters can heat their homes.

Food: Food prices remain high in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine – wartime disruptions and international sanctions have disrupted global food supply chains, and our local farms face skyrocketing costs for everything from fuel to fertilizer to farming equipment. In Congress, I’ll continue our congressional delegation’s leadership on smart agricultural policy, strengthening our local food systems and supporting family farms.

Child care: Vermont families pay the highest percentage of income on child care in the country. Parents of toddlers are paying one-quarter of every paycheck on child care. That is absurd. To help working parents get ahead, I’ll work to pass a plan to cap the cost of child care at 7% of income for every household.

I see it every day on the campaign trail: Vermonters are feeling the strain of high prices. As your Congresswoman, I promise this: I’ll take a pragmatic approach to leadership that puts results over rhetoric, and I’ll remain laser-focused on the most pressing needs of Vermonters.

Yours,

Molly
