This past weekend, I had the honor of joining the Staten Island Sri Lankan community for a press conference on the steps of Borough Hall. Together, we called for a peaceful democratic transition in Sri Lanka and for the international community to aid this transition by helping Sri Lanka’s economy through this tumultuous time.
Staten Island is home to one of the largest Sri Lankan communities in the world, and when our neighbors’ families abroad are in turmoil, we will make it our duty to stand beside them.
The international community cannot sit by while a corrupt government inflicts further economic turmoil, starvation, and human rights violations on its people. I was proud to stand with the Staten Island Sri Lankan community for this press conference on Sunday, and I’m honored to continue supporting them in making not only Staten Island’s voice heard but also the voices of the Sri Lankan people.
