Dear Ward 8 Residents,

Earlier this week, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Director of DC Health, provided an update on monkeypox. Since May 2022, the District has reported 122 cases of monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The virus is spreading mostly through close, intimate contact ([link removed]) with someone who has monkeypox. Monkeypox can spread from the time symptoms start until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.

DC Health is encouraging more DC residents to pre-register for a vaccination appointment at preventmonkeypox.dc.gov ([link removed]) .

Currently, to be eligible for the monkeypox vaccine in DC, a person must be a District resident, 18 years of age or older, and:
* Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and have had multiple (more than one) or any anonymous sexual partners in the last 14 days; or
* Transgender women or nonbinary persons assigned male at birth who have sex with men; or
* Sex workers (of any sexual orientation/gender); or
* Staff (of any sexual orientation/gender) at establishments where sexual activity occurs (e.g., bathhouses, saunas, sex clubs).

Monkeypox vaccinations are confidential and District residents can pre-register for monkeypox vaccination appointments by visiting preventmonkeypox.dc.gov ([link removed]) .

Regards,
Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8

Meet Marketta Buchanan!
Marketta is the Committee Clerk for the Office of Councilmember Trayon White. Apart of her duties as Committee Clerk consist of taking calls from constituents and different people throughout the city and direct them to the appropriate parties that can assist them.

She also keeps of track of all budget related items , constituent complaints, comments and concerns along with tracking issues regarding recreation, parks and libraries.

We asked Marketta a few questions so you can get to know her. Get to know more about Marketta below:

Q: What do you love most about Ward 8?

A: The genuine love that most of us have for each other. The different food options that are now coming into the ward and the activities now available for our youth and most importantly my community, Congress Park!

Q: What motivates you at work?

A: When I’m told how I made someone’s day just by being kind and listening and literally people opening up feeling comfortable talking to me as if have known eachother for a long time.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night owl?

A: Night owl.

Q: What’s something you’re proud of?

A: My daughter and the relationship I’ve built with the kids in my community.

Q: What else do you want to share about yourself?

A:I love kids, reading and most importantly, I love helping people. I’m preparing to go back to school and I am looking forward to furthering my education.

I’m very laid back. In my spare time, I take the kids In my community on educational and fun outings to expose them to new things. I spend a lot of time with my mother ----she is the life of the party! I am just a down-to-earth, caring person and I try to remain that way.
