Friend,
I am writing to you with some very exciting news!
This week, Governor Hochul signed my bill, S.1078B, into law! This new law will require that new drivers in New York learn about pedestrian and bicyclist safety before getting their license.
|
With the rapid growth of bicycling and scooter use, our streets have changed drastically over the last decade. But our DMV’s driver education never evolved to reflect that. In fact, the New York State Driver’s Manual included just one single page on sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, and skateboarders.
The lack of road-sharing knowledge, awareness, and respect has unfortunately resulted in thousands of tragic, avoidable, crashes – until now.

That’s why I’m so proud of the passage of this bill. Finally, we will educate new motorists fully on sharing our roads and respecting all pedestrians and cyclists. Our roadways are shared spaces, and we all deserve to feel safe in our communities, no matter what transportation we use.
I’m especially honored to have worked with so many incredible community partners to help make this bill a reality. This new law would not have been possible without the fortitude and support of countless street safety advocates, my legislative partner on this bill, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, my fellow lawmakers, and Governor Hochul.
But in order to push for ALL of the street safety measures our communities deserve, I need your help, friend. Will you chip in whatever you can today, to ensure I can keep making New York’s streets safer for all of us to share?

Thank you so much for all of your support throughout this journey. This new law has been a long time in the making, but I’m honored to have done the work with you all.
In Community,
