Texas Stream Team experiences growth
Thanks to all the volunteers who participated in last month?s Texas Stream Team Training held June 4! Volunteers learned all about water quality while completing three phases of training using a test kit that measures physical and chemical parameters in water.
The Texas Stream Team is a network of trained volunteers and supportive partners working together to understand and protect Texas waterways. Texas Stream Team is administered through a cooperative partnership between Texas State University, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hundreds of volunteers collect water quality data on waterways throughout Texas. The City of Fort Worth partners with the Texas Stream Team Program by supporting local volunteers who perform?sampling in Fort Worth. Volunteers are asked to monitor their site(s) monthly at the same time of day each month during a one-year commitment. Monitoring takes approximately one to two hours per month per site.

Future Farmers of America Days of Service a success
Students with the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Organization didn?t let soaring summer temperatures deter them from serving last week. During the state convention, students compete in events, attend workshops and luckily for the city, volunteer! During their Days of Service, 1,048 students signed up for volunteering opportunities. FFA members helped with landscaping at the Botanic Gardens and the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, assisted with weeding and planting at the city?s Rolling Hills Tree Farm, and removed litter from 11 city parks!
Thank you National FFA Organization for working to keep Fort Worth beautiful! We appreciate your efforts!
Safety tips during a summer litter cleanup
The weather experts predict?this year's summer will be hotter than average for most of the lower 48 states. Even regions of the country that are accustomed to mild summers could experience record highs.
- Wear appropriate clothing, footwear and a hat.
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully- preferably early mornings.
- Wear sunscreen and reapply periodically.
- Avoid hot and heavy meals.
- Drink plenty of fluids - whether you feel thirsty or not, drink plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated, especially when you're working outside.
- Stay away from sugary and caffeinated drinks.
- Replace salt and minerals (Replenish your electrolytes).
- Take regular breaks in a shaded area throughout your event.
BE SAFE!
Adopt-A-Spot Spotlight
This month, we are spotlighting On Angel Wing Delivery, Inc.! This is a local non-profit organization which helps feed seniors and homebound individuals and families in need by transporting groceries from a local food pantry. Earlier this year, in addition to helping those in need, this organization was looking for another opportunity to give back to the community. They joined the city's program in February, adopting Golf Club Drive near Eagle Mountain Lake, and have already started their litter cleanups! Thank you for your hard work keeping your neighborhood clean!
Our Adopt-A-Spot program is a great opportunity for groups of all kinds to help make our community a better place! If you would like to learn more, we invite you to visit the program website.
