It’s been almost a month since the devastating decision from our Supreme Court to overturn the half century protections of Roe v. Wade. But one thing remains clear for me: Abortion is a right - regardless of this decision, regardless of state implemented trigger laws.
The next fight now is to codify the freedom of choice in Congress, and while I am heartened to see the President sign an Executive Order earlier this month to safeguard abortion rights, we must do more.
The House has already passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) after the leaked Supreme Court decision earlier this year, and last week we just passed the WHPA again, as well as the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act to protect the right to travel to seek abortion services.
And though the Senate blocked the debate of the WHPA in May, we must call on the Senate to act on both pieces of legislation NOW.
The decision to overturn Roe didn’t just affect our healthcare choices, it also threatened the privacy and personal information of millions of women across the country.
The White House earlier this month warned individuals to be “really careful” when using phone apps that track users’ menstrual cycles and private health information over fears that the data could be used against them if they were to seek abortion services. This not only poses serious repercussions for women seeking healthcare, but also for medical professionals who provide these services.
That’s why the House is also moving to act on legislation that would protect the privacy of patients’ health records but we cannot afford to have these crucial bills die in the Senate.
