Barbara Lee for Congress

John, I wanted to make sure you saw this:

I was arrested yesterday for protesting for abortion rights outside the Supreme Court — along with Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and 14 other lawmakers.

Barbara and her colleagues at the protest.

As a sitting member of Congress, my duty and my moral responsibility is to fight against unjust laws.

If that means getting arrested for speaking truth to power and standing up for bodily autonomy in solidarity with communities whose rights are being stripped away, then so be it.

We put our bodies on the line to demand bans off our bodies and protest the far-right Supreme Court majority’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. We had to speak up for the millions of Americans who lost the personal freedom to make their own healthcare decisions.

But this isn’t the only statement we’re making — House Democrats took concrete action to defend reproductive freedom last week by passing two critical bills.

The Women’s Health Protection Act reaffirms our commitment to enshrining reproductive rights by ensuring everyone — regardless of what state you live in — can access abortion care.

We then went one step further by passing the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act — a bill to protect abortion access by prohibiting states from interfering with a person's ability to access out-of-state abortion services.

Our work isn’t over — along with fighting to protect abortion access, I am working to make birth control medication available over-the-counter and ensure that the full slate of reproductive care is accessible no matter where you live.

Can I count on you to join me in this fight? Chip in today to help me keep up the fight for reproductive rights and defeat the far-right’s efforts to strip us of our personal freedoms.
