Dear Friend,

Last week, I signed a historic education budget to improve every kid’s in-class experience, recruit the best educators, and build up our schools. Today, we are building on that success as I sign the omnibus budget.

*This fiscally responsible, balanced, bipartisan budget invests in people, unleashes Michigan’s potential, and funds key projects – all without raising taxes by a dime.*

Governor Whitmer signing Omnibus Budget

I want to share you with you some of the key investments this budget makes into Michiganders.

*Public Health and Public Safety*

Two top of mind priorities for every Michigander are public health and public safety. As a former prosecutor, public safety is a core issue for me, and I will work with anyone to keep families safe in their homes and on the streets. This budget invests in both by:

* Funding local law enforcement, fire departments, and other first responders to help bring down crime and keep families safe
* Setting up a new statewide judicial case management system to improve court efficiency and get violent criminals off the streets
* Improving dental care access for Michiganders enrolled in Medicaid
* Cleaning up contaminated sites
* Speeding up lead service line replacement
* Constructing a new state psychiatric hospital, expanding our mental health service capacity

*Economy and Workforce*

Investing in our economy is critical for Michigan’s future. This budget supports our workforce by:

* Fully funding Michigan Reconnect, which offers tuition-free higher education or skills training
* Funding Going Pro, which helps businesses develop in-house talent
* Investing in the Office of Rural Development, which I established to support economic development in rural communities throughout Michigan
* Kickstarting a “Buy Michigan” campaign to support Michigan products

*Infrastructure and Community*

When local communities thrive, our whole state thrives. This budget supports communities by:

* Building new state public health lab
* Constructing a new veteran’s home in Marquette
* Backing the Mound Road project in Macomb
* Making critical improvements to Selfridge Air National Guard Base
* Increasing resources available to local governments to help them fund local law enforcement and other first responders.
* Honoring the memory of lost servicemembers by establishing a veteran’s cemetery in Grayling

I am so proud of the work we’ve accomplished to invest in Michiganders. When we protect public health and public safety, support our local communities, and bolster our workforce, our state has limitless potential to thrive.

But there is still work to be done. Right now, Michiganders are facing rising prices at the pump, the grocery store, and on countless everyday expenses. After the budget, Michigan still has billions of dollars in revenue left on the state balance sheet. That's why I've proposed:

* Temporarily suspending the state sales tax on gas to lower prices for every driver
* Rolling back the retirement tax to put an average of $1,000 back in the pockets of our seniors
* Tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit to deliver an average tax refund of $3,000 to 730,000 working families
* Delivering $500 inflation relief checks to Michiganders.

Michiganders need real relief, and I will work with anyone to put Michiganders first and get this done.

Sincerely,

Governor Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer
Governor of Michigan
