“Right now I'm waiting on a prescription because BCBS hasn't approved it yet. It's sitting at the drug store but I won't pick it up until I find out if insurance will cover it. They probably won't, because my experience is that they never cover the stuff I need.”
“As a physician, I cannot provide adequate healthcare to my patients with limited or absent insurance. Obamacare is not enough, and immigrants are almost totally locked out.”
“Being a family of 5, my current co-pays and out-of-pocket max go up to almost $17,000/yr...I am terrified to go or take anyone of my family to go to the doctor.”
“My sister was denied coverage for over $20,000 of emergency care for a life-threatening sudden illness. After several terrifically stressful months of appeals, the charges were finally re-coded and covered."
“Over my lifetime, I've probably ended up paying well over a million dollars out of pocket in order to manage my mental health, both in receiving treatment and paying for medication and medical procedures.”
Friend, these are just a few of the stories from our neighbors right here in the First District, who attended our Health Care Town Halls this fall to share their experiences with our health care system.
That system is failing us—and as a constituent recently said, “We can’t keep congratulating ourselves for throwing a ten-foot life rope to people drowning 50 feet out.” This profit-driven system acts as if health care isn’t a human right, as if life-saving treatments should be reserved only for the highest income bracket—all thanks to massive corporations swaying members of Congress with piles of campaign contributions on issues like health insurance, regulation, and drug pricing.
That’s why for me, Medicare For All is the only option. It guarantees coverage for everyone regardless of who they are, how much they make, or the neighborhood they live in. Under Medicare For All, the First District’s health and wellbeing will no longer be for sale.
If you’re ready for a representative who will champion health care as a human right—for everyone, not just the privileged few—chip in today and help us build a campaign that can win.
All doctors take a sworn oath to treat their patients with the best care, but right now, our system isn't allowing them to do that. The sole focus of health care should be our treatment, healing, and prevention—not generating $400 billion a year in corporate profits. Nobody should go bankrupt or into crushing debt just to stay alive.
Personally, I’ve felt this pain unfold in my own family, as pharmaceutical corporations profited off treatment for the illness of my loved ones. As the member of Congress representing the First District, I’ll fight for a system anchored in dignity, access, and quality care for all of us.
If you’re ready for a more just, more humane health care system that works for everyone, chip in today to help me get to work building it in Washington.
Thank you so much,
Alex
