John —

We have known for some time that Donald Trump bears some responsibility for the violent insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. After all, he summoned the mob, filled them with lies about the election, and directed them to go to the Capitol that fateful day.

But as my House colleagues on the January 6th Special Committee pushed forward with hearings over the last few weeks, they uncovered some truly shocking facts. Trump not only knew the mob was heavily armed, he encouraged the Secret Service to remove metal detectors and let armed insurrectionists join his pre-insurrection pep rally outside the White House. The disgraced former president also tried to join the mob at the Capitol and would have done so if his security detail had not repeatedly refused to allow it. And when he learned that the violent mob he unleashed had breached the Capitol and was attempting to find and kill Vice President Pence, Trump not only did nothing, he suggested Pence deserved it.

It is clear that former President Trump not only committed a dereliction of duty that day; he was far more involved in the planning and implementation of the insurrection than we previously knew. And we haven’t even heard the full story yet.

We will hold those responsible for the January 6 attack accountable. I am grateful for the amazing job my colleagues on this committee have done – without their tireless pursuit of truth and their commitment to getting the facts on the record, there would be no hope for justice.

I am expressing my gratitude to the committee members this week. If you’d like me to pass along a message from you too, click here to share your thoughts. These members of Congress have more hard work ahead and I urge them to continue to publicly follow the facts – wherever they lead.

The hearings aren’t over yet, but we know that January 6th was a close call – we nearly lost the peaceful transfer of power at the bedrock of our republic. We deserve to know the full truth about that terrible day so that we can take action to ensure that it never happens again.

Personally, I believe that Trump’s violent attempt to block the transfer of power and override the results of our national election underscores the need to protect our vulnerable democracy. January 6th was just a warm-up session. We must take the threat of Trumpism, and the violent white Christian nationalism that animates it, very seriously – especially with the midterm elections right around the corner.

As your Congressman, I will continue to stand in the way of GOP extremists – and work to strengthen and repair our nation – but I need your help. Each and every one of us has a role to play in restoring our democracy.

Please stay engaged.

Thanks,

Jared
