What does life look like for them?

Dear John,

Sadly, the war in Ukraine continues and many refugees who fled the country have now been displaced for several months. What does life look like for them? We conducted a survey of almost 5,000 refugees from Ukraine who are living in neighbouring countries, and here is what they told us:

90% are women and children

23% had at least one person in their household with specific needs or a disability

82% had to separate from at least one immediate family member

74% had no plans to return home to Ukraine in the immediate future

Most of the refugees we surveyed hope that they can return home soon. They are anxious to reunite with friends and family, and constantly worry about their loved ones still in Ukraine. However, while the war continues, most Ukrainians simply do not know when they will be able to return. Inside Ukraine, displaced people are also living with uncertainty.

One thing is for certain—whether refugees choose to stay where they are or return home, UNHCR is there to support them. Inside Ukraine, UNHCR is undertaking housing repairs, providing cash assistance, legal support and other in-kind aid like mattresses and blankets, especially as the winter approaches.

Whether inside Ukraine or in neighbouring countries, we are continuing to support the immediate and long-term needs of people forced to flee. Refugees deserve to feel stability and live their everyday lives with dignity—they need cash assistance to cover rent, medicine and other basic needs. They need access to education, to childcare and to job opportunities.s.

Your ongoing support means that we will be able to provide long-term support—not just to people from Ukraine, but to people forced to flee all around the world.

Will you make a monthly donation to provide displaced people with the stability and dignity they deserve?

Thank you,

Astrid van Genderen Stort
