John, Fabian* hadn’t planned on leaving El Salvador. His daughter had a life there. A home. Then gang members threatened his family – and suddenly, staying in El Salvador wasn’t an option. To survive the weeks-long trek to the U.S., Fabian and his 5-year-old daughter imagined the safe future that awaited them. One where she could be a kid again. That dream ended just three days after arriving at our southern border, when they were ripped from each other’s arms. For four long months, they spent sleepless nights in separate detention centers, wondering if they’d ever see each other again. Fabian and his daughter were eventually reunited in El Salvador – but the trauma and terror they endured can never be erased. Tell Congress: the Children’s Safe Welcome Act (CSWA) is our chance to transform the way migrant kids and families are treated – today, and for generations to come. John, seeking safety is never a crime. But some migrant children are still being treated like prisoners – locked away in overcrowded, unhygienic facilities for months on end. To a scared, lonely child, those months can feel like a lifetime. The CSWA re-envisions how our immigration system treats kids, safeguarding their well-being. This is our nation's opportunity to finally put an end to family separation, family detention and dangerous holding facilities that are often unlicensed. This legislation also calls for child protection professionals at the border and legal representation for unaccompanied children – because their needs should never be an afterthought. Urge Congress to pass the CSWA to ensure kids in government custody are treated with dignity, respect and compassion! |
