Dear Friend,
At this very moment The DC Domestic Worker Bill of Rights is in trouble, and we need you!
Together with the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) we are making a call to all of our community to show your support for domestic workers in DC.
Last March, Councilmember Silverman introduced The DC Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The Labor and Workforce Development Committee held the bill’s hearing in June where over 90 people testified in strong support, many of you who are also on this list. Recently, Chairperson Mendelson made changes to the committee referrals to the bill and added a third committee referral, the Committee on Business and Economic Development. This can likely cause delays to the bill’s passage and may even stop it from passing before the end of session.
This bill is critical to ensure dignity and respect for domestic workers in DC. If this bill passes, not only will it end the racist and sexist exclusion of domestic workers from basic protections under DC’s Human Rights Law and DC’s occupational health and safety law, it will also give workers right to a contract and will educate workers and their employers on their rights.
The Chair of the Committee on Business and Economic Development, Kenyan McDuffie, is one of the co-sponsors of the bill. Today, we need you to reach out to Councilmember McDuffie and share your exuberant support for this bill and the importance of its passage now. Take a moment and let Councilmember McDuffie know that you want to see this bill passed. You can also use this document with sample tweets.
We urge you to stand with domestic workers in DC and act now!
In solidarity,
Nadia Salazar Sandi
